Working Group 2004 :
Minutes
First Meeting of IFIP Working Group on "Semantic Web"

October 26 2004, Cyprus

The major goal of this first meeting is to discuss the aims and scope of the working group, memberships, associated activities, and some immediate actions to be taken by the delegated responsible members.

The proposal for establishing the working group was initiated last December by Prof. Tharam Dillon, Prof. Max Bremer (chair TC12), and Prof. Robert Meersman (chair TC2). In comparison to some other existing groups, the meeting identified and recognized the unique position of this working group based on its scientific scope, together with its very ambitious goals as evidenced by the list of associated events and activities to be carried out by the working group, and it was decided to make it a joint working group of TC2 and TC12 with TC2 responsible for administration. In particular, the following items related to organization issues and detailed activities are discussed.

Organization issues:

Currently the group has 40 members located all over the world. Most of them are senior researchers, but it was decided to encourage senior researchers to also nominate junior researchers from their groups to become members. To recruit and assess the membership, a formal procedure will be established based on the researcher’s resume, physical participation of the activities/meetings, etc. Also, a steering committee will be set up to monitor and provide necessary guidance and support to the working group for each associated activity of the working group. The chairman of the group and committee will be nominated. A Web site will be built to facilitate interactive communication among the group members, linkage to relevant developments and projects in this area, and some prompt news/announcements. This Web site is expected to be updated every month. Every member of the group will be on a mailing list.

Detailed activities:
  1. Produce an annual yearbook published by some reputable publisher. Prof. Dillon has contacted three publishers, and prefers Springer. The later has also shown quite a bit of interest. It is planned that each yearbook may contain 10-12 chapters written by 3-4 people together. At the beginning, the content of this book can be the survey-like state of the art. The experiences of some European/Australian projects can also be good topics for 1-2 chapters.
  2. Organize an IFIP working conference in conjunction with a major event such as triconference OTM. This will be a 2-day conference like any other conference with call-for-paper, conference chair, program chair, and program committee to review papers. The proceedings will have the logo of IFIP. The first working conference would be on the first week of November in 2005 (OTM’05). Prof. Dillon will discuss with OTM management the possibility of co-location
  3. Organize a special session at major conference like DEXA, WAIM, WISE, etc. This may contain only 4-5 papers, maybe from the group members based on their presentation at the working group’s annual physical meeting. These will be on highly focused issues.

Note that the above 1), 2) and 3) items intend to let the working group reach the wide community in this area, nd thus increase the visibility and reputation outside the group.

  4. Annual physical meeting and an e-meeting at least once on one additional occasion. During the physical meeting, the group members or invited observers will present their work in progress. The results could be recommended to some sp The appropriate time slots will be further investigated, which might be a bit difficult as the members are drawn from across all the continents.
  5. Provide inputs to the standard’s body. Group members who participate in any standard related activities could coordinate this.

For each of the above activities, more than one person will be delegated with the responsibility to look after it to ensure the consistent functioning of the working group activity in the absence of one person.

The following additional members were nominated by the meeting to join the working group: Peter Spyns, Wil van der Aalst, Elena Paslarü.
