Working Group 2005 :
Reports 2004-2005
Report of IFIP Working Group 2.12/12.4 on "Semantic Web"

1 Nov 2005, Cyprus

Approval
The Working Group was approved by the Technical in September 2004.

Membership
The Working group has 35 members and their CVs are listed on the TC2 website.

Meeting
The first meeting of the working group was held in Cyprus, October 26 2004 in conjunction with OTM conferences. The major goal of this first meeting was to discuss the aims and scope of the working group, memberships, associated activities, and some immediate actions to be taken by the delegated responsible members.

The proposal for establishing the working group was initiated last December by Prof. Tharam Dillon, Prof. Max Bremer (chair TC12), and Prof. Robert Meersman (chair TC2). In comparison to some other existing groups, the meeting identified and recognized the unique position of this working group based on its scientific scope, together with its very ambitious goals as evidenced by the list of associated events and activities to be carried out by the working group, and it was decided to make it a joint working group of TC2 and TC12 with TC2 responsible for administration. In particular, the following items related to organization issues and detailed activities are discussed.

Organization issues:
Currently the group has 35 members located all over the world. Most of them are senior researchers, but it was decided to encourage senior researchers to also nominate junior researchers from their groups to become members. To recruit and assess the membership, a formal procedure will be established based on the researcher’s resume, physical participation of the activities/meetings, etc. Also, a steering committee will be set up to monitor and provide necessary guidance and support to the working group for each associated activity of the working group. For each of the above activities, more than one person will be delegated with the responsibility to look after it to ensure the consistent functioning of the working group activity in the absence of one person.

A Web site has been built to facilitate interactive communication among the group members, linkage to relevant developments and projects in this area, and some prompt news/announcements. This Web site is expected to be updated every month. Every member of the group will be on a mailing list. For each of the above activities, more than one person will be delegated with the responsibility to look after it to ensure the consistent functioning of the working group activity in the absence of one person. A workshop is being organised on the first week of November in 2005 in conjunction with (OTM’05). Prof. Dillon will discuss with OTM management the possibility of co-location . The call for papers can be found on the OTM website. For each of the above activities, more than one person will be delegated with the responsibility to look after it to ensure the consistent functioning of the working group activity in the absence of one person.

The following additional members were nominated by the meeting to join the working group: Peter Spyns, Wil van der Aalst, Elena Paslarü.
